Laboratory Self-Weight Consolidation Testing of Dredged Material Analyzed Using a One-Dimensional Finite Strain Consolidation Method

Research has shown that the properties which govern the consolidation of dredged material are best determined using a one-dimensional finite strain consolidation theory. This method requires a complete relationship between void ratio and effective stress for all expected void ratios in a dredged layer, which can be determined from laboratory testing. The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) suggests using a self-weight consolidation test apparatus to obtain void ratio/effective stress conditions for very low effective stresses. In this paper a modified laboratory testing method of a self-weight consolidation test is developed to obtain a range of void ratios and effective stress conditions at low effective stresses for material obtained from the Savannah River Harbor. Testing methods are discussed and data is analyzed using a selected one-dimensional finite strain consolidation method. Findings from the research conducted in this paper are as follows: a reliable relationship between vertical effective stress and permeability as function of void ratio can be obtained from the test methods described; there appears to be a unique void ratio/effective stress relationship and a unique void ratio/permeability relationship for the material tested; a three to four-month period is a satisfactory amount of time to obtain near 100 percent primary consolidation for materials with initial void ratios of 7.0 to 10.0; and test methods are repeatable and can produce homogeneous samples

Proposal of Development of a Gifted Program to Be Implemented by South Eastern Special Education

Since a major purpose of American education is to meet each child\u27s individual needs, then the intellectually gifted children require the same consideration as those who are slow learners, handicapped, economically disadvantaged, or emotionally disturbed. Research reveals that there are approximately one and one-half to two million gifted children in the United States which means that between two and three percent of the students in any given classroom fall into this category. It is an alrming fact that between ten and twenty percent of the gifted students become high school dropouts and a much larger number never attend college. Presently, 35 percent of the gifted student population in the United States is served with some type of education designed for gifted children. Since 1957 when the federal government became alarmed that the “Russians” would get ahead of the United States some progress has been made in gifted education. The National Defense Act was enacted in 1958 to aid schools in improving programs for gifted children. Programs have improved, but not at the pace expected. Full-time gifted programs are needed to help the gifted student meet his/her highest potential. The South Eastern Special Education District is proposed in this study as a cooperative district for a full-time gifted program. A centrally located community college would be an appropriate setting for this type of program due to its facilities and personnel. Requirements for administrators, teachers, and pupil personnel are outlined as is criteria for gifted student participation. Presently there are no monies for a full-time gifted program within South Eastern Special Education District due to federal funding being reduced. Schools can still offer gifted services on a limited basis using equipment, facilities, and personnel that they have

Factors relating to achievement of high school students in Kuching City, Malaysia

    Get PDF
This study aims to contribute towards a greater understanding of high-school-student learning, with a view to determining remedial action to be taken to upgrade academic achievement, improving learning and teaching strategies and environment, and assisting in national curriculum development. The research was of a non-experimental ex post facto survey type, following techniques such as those of Entwistle- Kozeki, Rotter and Carver-Scheier, and using a specially designed demographic questionnaire. The sample studied consisted of 925 seventeen-year-old lower-sixth-formers in the eight high schools of Kuching City, Sarawak, Malaysia, differentiated according to a number of criteria: science vs. arts streams, rural vs. urban origin, day scholars vs. boarders, boys vs. girls, and the six major ethnic groups. The data were analysed using t-tests, stepwise regression and correlation-statistical techniques to establish what correlation could be found between the educational achievements (SPM results) of the pupils in those groupings and the learning approaches, learning styles, school motivation and psychological attitudes (e.g. optimism, locus of control). It was found that there were considerable correlations between predictors and the overall achievement in each of the classification groups. However, the best predictors of achievement varied significantly from group to group.Achievement in individual subjects of the curriculum was also studied in relation to aspects of the teaching learning environment, student attitudes and demographic factors. This too provided evidence of significant correlation between achievement and certain factors for each disipline, but a wide range of variation between the predictors for achievement in different disciplines. On the basis of conclusions drawn from the analysis of the data, recommendations are made for remedial actions and strategic planning to be undertaken to improve students' achievement and enhance the institutional teaching-learning environment. Scope for further research comprising longitudinal studies, wider samples, and different methodologies is indicated, which could lead to a better understanding of high-school students' learning in this developing third- world country
